PPE 208 - Wellness, Exercise, and Sport Psychology
3 Credits
As the demand for enhanced physical performance continues and the focus on Wellness grows, the cognitive or mental aspects within wellness and physical activity is exposed. Wellness, Exercise, and Sport Psychology has evolved through this need. Specifically, this course will relate the application of conventional psychological areas (personality, motivation, aggression, etc.) to the arena of wellness and physical activity. The application of psychological skills to performance and wellness is also an essential element of this ever-changing field.

Course Learning Outcomes
1.Analyze and differentiate among major theories of personality development, evaluating their validity through reasoned inquiry and observation of sport behavior.
2.Apply the Yerkes–Dodson Law to real or simulated case studies to explore how new information about arousal, anxiety, and performance can inform decision making in sport or exercise settings.
3.Explain and evaluate the Information Processing Model of concentration and attention, using evidence from sport performance or wellness contexts to interpret attentional demands and limitations.
4.Demonstrate knowledge of the scientific method by gathering, interpreting, and applying new information to understand behavior, performance, or psychological processes in sport and exercise.
5.Design a behavior change system for an individual or group by applying theories of learning and engaging in inquiry that integrates diverse sources of evidence.
6.Utilize multiple viewpoints and theories of achievement motivation to develop and defend a coaching or performance enhancement model, considering diverse athlete perspectives and motivational needs.
7.Construct a system for developing group cohesion, integrating research, multiple viewpoints, and ethical considerations related to team dynamics and performance.
8.Investigate and apply cognitive learning strategies—including imagery, relaxation, self talk, confidence enhancement, and concentration techniques—while evaluating their effectiveness through inquiry and reflection.
9.Demonstrate constructive advocacy, respectful dissent, and evidence‑based dialogue when engaging with conflicting viewpoints in wellness, exercise, or sport psychology.
